Does CBD Boost Your Immune System?

How Cannabidiol (CBD) Works for Treating Anxiety

The short answer to this question is yes, it does! CBD positively affects the immune system, which means you have a better chance of fighting bacteria and viruses.

First, however, we need to look at some vital information regarding the immune system and CBD. If you’re interested in finding out more, keep on reading.

What’s the Immune System?

The human immune system is a defense system that protects us from microbes trying to harm the body. It’s a highly complex network of cells, chemicals, and organs all doing a different job.

The immune system can detect and destroy viruses and bacteria that enter the body. The most interesting part about it is that it keeps track of all viruses it has already destroyed. So, the next time they try to enter the body, the immune system will instantly know how to handle the problem.

A Few Facts About CBD?

There’s still a stigma surrounding CBD products even in developed Western countries. Some of the most liberal ones, Canada and the US, are now entirely dedicated to promoting CBD products because they have many health benefits.

According to the CBD facts, some 64 million Americans have already tried CBD. The same source explains that CBD with less than 0.3% THC is legal. THC is the ingredient in cannabis that makes users feel “high.” Recreational marijuana contains 20% THC, while some strains contain more than 30%.

How Does CBD Boost the Immune System?

The endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors that regulates many different functions in the human body—metabolism, mood, growth, the way our organs work, reproduction, and so forth. Endocannabinoids have a significant impact on the immune system as they control specific immune functions. That’s where CBD comes into play, as it stimulates the endocannabinoid system. Let’s go into more detail below.

CBD Boosts Production of White Blood Cells

The white blood cells are the warriors in our bodies. They are the ones that detect and destroy the microbes. When there’s an intruder, lots of white cells die, and new ones need to be produced fast. CBD helps speed up this process.

It Reduces Inflammation

Cannabis is a well-known natural remedy that reduces inflammation. Having in mind that inflammation can be dangerous, it’s essential to have a cure for it. CBD is a compound recognized by scientists and doctors for treating severe inflammations.

It Relieves Stress and Anxiety

Stress is known to weaken the immune system. Everyday stressors increase the cortisol levels, which prevents the proper functioning of the immune system. That’s the reason why we are more susceptible to infections.

CBD lowers the levels of stress and anxiety. We are doing ourselves a favor because we feel better, but we also help the immune system restore its primary function.

Conclusion

As you can see from the points mentioned above, CBD is highly effective and helps the immune system work properly. Since cannabis is natural and doesn’t contain chemicals like other drugs, this is the best way to boost one of the most crucial systems in the body.

During the coronavirus pandemic, it’s especially important to be as healthy as possible. That way, you can reduce the chance of getting infected with COVID-19. That’s why the CBD industry in the US has become essential for the citizens.

How CBD Can Help Your Pets

Cannabis is known to provide a variety of great medicinal benefits for humans, but did you know that it can also be greatly beneficial to your pets too?

First thing’s first: pets should only have CBD, not marijuana.

In case you’re not familiar with exactly what CBD is, let’s talk about that first. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound found in hemp. It typically doesn’t contain any tetrahydrocannabidol (THC), the compound that gets you high and causes psychoactive effects in humans. While no formal studies have been done on how CBD affects dogs, cats, and horses, scientists know that cannabinoids interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the central and peripheral nervous system, helping to maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal, healthy state.

Owners who give CBD to their dogs have reported that it helps with pain management, particularly neuropathic pain, seizure control, reducing anxiety, and appetite stimulation – many of the same benefits that humans use CBD for.

While there aren’t many side effects, it’s important to note that there are a few that have been reported. CBD can cause dry mouth, leading to an increased water intake. It may also lead to drowsiness or lowered blood pressure, particularly with higher doses. It’s extremely important to start off small when starting a CBD regimen for your pet. Since studies have not yet been done of these effects, it is unknown what size dose can be toxic for animals, and this is dependent on the animal’s weight and size.

When giving CBD to your dogs, we highly recommend using the best quality organic product that you can find. Some pesticides and other chemicals are toxic, so it’s best to avoid them as best as you can. This does mean that the cost of the CBD might be high, but your best friend’s health is certainly worth the price!

How Cannabidiol (CBD) Works for Treating Anxiety

How Cannabidiol (CBD) Works for Treating Anxiety

If you suffer from anxiety then maybe CBD can help you treat these stress responses. Cannabidiol has been shown to reduce the anxiety induced by simulated public speaking in this 2011 study.

In 2016, CBD was Googled more than THC and has been growing since. In a recent survey, Quartz asked 2,000 Americans about their use and perceptions of CBD. While 86% of people surveyed had heard of CBD, only less than 20% had tried it, and less than 7% admitted to using it regularly.

Why People Are Taking CBD

Of those surveyed by Quartz, 22% said they used CBD socially, 55% of those who tried CBD said they ‘used it to relax’ and another 50% said they were looking for stress and anxiety relief. See Chart below:

The Reasons US Adults Say They Tried CBD Cannabidol

Anxiety-Related disorders affect 18% of adults in the United States age 18 and older. Pharmaceutical companies answer to anxiety is SSRIs (Prozac and Zoloft) and tranquilizers (Valium and Xanax).

If you are prescribed one of the numerous drugs to treat anxiety like one of the many selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with little success, then it might be time to give Cannabis and more specifically Cannabidiol or CBD a shot.

There is a large subset of people suffering from anxiety that see no relief from these drugs, can’t handle the side effects, or do not want to take due to these drugs highly addictive nature. In recent years, CBD has shown evidence that it has a powerful impact on anti-anxiety properties.

Cannabidiol appears to be well tolerated by users and safe to use making CBD an alternative to other drugs used to treat anxiety and depression.

CBD May Be Beneficial in Treating These Anxiety-Related Disorders

  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Social phobia
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Mild to moderate depression
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

How Does CBD Work?

While most research currently on CBD is preclinical and based on animal studies, CBD exerts several actions in the brain that may explain why it could be useful in treating anxiety.

5-HT1A is a subtype of the serotonin receptor. It matters because anxiety and depression are treated with SSRIs like Prozac or Zoloft. These serotonin reuptake inhibitors work by blocking reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which increases the availability of serotonin in the synaptic space.

CBD can reduce anxiety and boost mood in certain cases by helping the brain to transmit more serotonin signals. However, this is not fully understood about why.

CBD may act similar to SSRIs by boosting signaling through serotonin receptors. Spanish researchers found that CBD enhances 5-HT1A transmission in this 2016 study.

They published that “Our results demonstrate that CBD exerts fast and maintained antidepressant-like effects as evidenced by the reversal of the OBX-induced hyperactivity and anhedonia.”

Their findings indicate that CBD could represent a novel fast antidepressant drug by enhancing both serotonergic and glutamate cortical signaling through a 5-HT1A receptor.

How Does CBD Help Reduce Anxiety?

Patients afflicted with generalized social anxiety reported a significant decrease in anxiety that was supported by brain scans showing blood flow in the brain in patterns consistent with the anti-anxiety effect. This study 2011 study also showed reduced ECD uptake in the left parahippocampal gyrus, hippocampus, and inferior temporal gyrus.

“This suggests that CBD reduces anxiety in SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and that this is related to its effects on activity in limbic and paralimbic brain areas.” – Department of Neuroscience and Behavior, School fo Medicine of Ribeirao, University of San Paulo

Should I Use CBD to Treat Anxiety?

While human studies are starting to validate CBD’s efficacy as an anti-anxiety treatment more research is needed to examine the long-term effects of CBD.

CBD has so much potential due to its demonstrated efficacy and highly favorable safety profile, especially when compared to currently available anti-anxiety drugs, which make it a safe addition if not replacement to currently available pharmaceuticals.
